I spent the first part of last week cold and (wind)blown away by the pure magic that is western Nebraska. Rolling hills, moody skies and the unadulterated joy of exploring a new place and meeting new-to-me creatures more than made up for the discomfort of bruised palms, sprained ankles and sunrise bird banding in wet, freezing weather. (And it almost, but not quite, made up for the horror of a tick walking across my computer screen as I lay snuggled in my sleeping bag at night.) . The best thing about this short trip? It was just a taste of things to come. In just a few days I’ll be back to TA a three-week Field Ornithology course, that’s three weeks of traipsing across the great plains in search of all things birds. And guess what, it’s supposed to be 30-40 degrees warmer.
