My time in the field freed me from a serious news and reading rut. I had trapped myself into a loop, reading the same story over and over again. Escapist fantasy designed to allow me to think about the state of the world as little as possible. (Note - I still love fantasy with my entire being, and sometimes you really just need that escape. I did.) But in the field, free from the non-stop news cycle, I fell in love with narrative nonfiction again. The thrill of digging deep into complicated topics. Of gaining historical context to the events of today and hearing perspectives of those outside my social bubble. Now that I’m back in the real world, I’ve been trying to keep it up. To stay out of the game where I regurgitate all the headlines I scrolled past on twitter or read the same “breaking news” article on five different news sites. Pictured here are two of my favorite nonfiction books from the last few months and one (Erosion) that I plan on starting in the next few weeks. What were your favorite books from 2019?
