Blue skies, dusty roads and the constant croon of cranes on the horizon. A perfect Nebraska day. . I spent it chasing NatGeo photographer fantasies on the banks of Nebraska’s Platte River. Documenting, in my own humble I-don’t-own-a-DSLR way, the migration of these gawky, goofy dinosaurs. Hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes fly through this area each spring, spending the days foraging in shorn cornfields and restored grasslands and the nights roosting wingtip-to-wingtip on mid-river sandbars. . Sometimes they dance. Popping up out of the cornfields like grey-feathered popcorn from a pan, they’ll stretch their wings or throw a stick, going through the motions of thousands of years of ritual courtship to show off for their mate. It’s quite the sight to see.
